N00b question will appreciate the help

I just started using photofiltre and have gotten the basic idea down theres only one thing i need help with.

lets say I have a black background and theres a character i want to put onto it that has a white background i use the magic wand and copy the image but theres always that white onutline around them how do i get rid of this.( this is for all pics i try to put onto a background)

after selction with magic wand, use Edit > Advanced clipping and try some progressif contour
