error: Unable to load image in file ....(perhaps solved)

Hello,

PhotoFiltre 6.2.7

I have many (~ 200) BMP files in several directories which I want to modify using the batch tool.

Some of the files (about 30%) cannot be opened.
Error "Unable to load image in file "

The same with "open" or "drag+drop". They simply cannot be loaded.

I can't see any system. All these files have been created at the same time with the same tool.

But:

I can open all these files with "Paint",

a)With Copy+Paste rom Paint to PhotoFiltre they can be loaded!

b)Modify (in Paint) and "save As" test.bmp : PhotoFiltre can load it

c)"save As" unmodified as test.bmp: PhotoFiltre cannot(!) load it, same error

Can someone help?

Hi Itami,

Check your extensions to insure they are correct on the bmp's that will not open. Otherwise, what could be done is to open the images that are not loading in your Paint software and resave them as .bmp. I would try one first, and if it is still unwilling to open, save them as .jpg then convert them to .bmp once you have them in PF.

All files have the BMP extension.

That's what I wrote in my posting.
And the fact that they can be opened by Paint proofs that these files are pure BMPs.

The problem is: more than 60 files need this special treatment.

I sent this report hoping that it was a known problem.

I think I found it:

The original BMP1-file has, say, n1 bytes of size on disk.
I load BMP1 in Paint and save it back on disk --> BMP2
BMP2 also has n1 bytes of size on disk.

Now i modify BMP1 and redo the modifikation.
Than save the file to disk --> BMP3
BMP3 has n3 bytes of size on disk. And n3 < n1 (that's quite normal).

Now I copy BMP1 --> BMP4, Bytes 0...n3
And with my hex-program I can check that BMP1 and BMP4 are identical from 0...n3 (--> also the headers are identical)

Result:
BMP1 cannot be loaded into PF.
BMP2 cannot be loaded into PF.
BMP3 can be loaded into PF.
BMP4 can be loaded into PF.

From that follows: PF does not work correctly concerning end of BMP data in the file.

What do you think?

Please upgrade 6.3.1 your PhotoFiltre program. May be resetup your Windows system? wrong associate command under Xp?

Try to use XnView to reconvert your files bmp ==> bmp. Perhaps after, you can open all in PF.

I don't know why some BMP can not be opened with PF, can you send me a sample ?

I've upgraded to PF 6.3.1 on Win2000: same problem.
And also the same on my XP system.

Meanwhile I've written a small PB(=PureBasic) programm which converts+resizes all my BMPs.
But because I have the feeling that PF's quality of resized images is better than PB's, I would prefer PF.

Yes, but, hmmm: how?

But if my previous post applies, it my well be that the image you receive has somewhat modified data at the end of the file (and outside of BMP-data) and it may be loadable with your PF.
Anyway, we should give it a try. So, what shall I do?

Yes i received and tested. The bug is in the native delphi function (i will do more test to bu sure)
I just use the code :

Bitmap.LoadFromFile(filename)

I think it's fixed in next Delphi but i only use Delphi 7
