program shuts down

i will start to edit an inage and then the program will shut down. i have not had a chance to use the program for more than one minute. it happens when i start to open another image.

can someone help me understand what is going on?

Is your Windows installation free of any virus or Spyware ? Could you fill your profile with your RAM, CPU and OS ?

windows XP
home edition
version 2002
service pack 2

pentium 4
CPU: 2.5 GHz
256 MB RAM

not much memory being used.

also, one image i had opened was a .gif and the other i tried to open was a .jpg

its working fine now. not sure what is different.
