Applying a brush on the whole image?

Is there a way to apply a brush - in my case the history brush tool - to the whole image instead of having to do it manually? I was thinking of applying it on a grid rather than every individual pixel as that would only lead to more computing needed without any benefit. However, I don't know if that is possible, nor did I have any luck googling for such a functionality.

You can try the "Fill tool" or menu Edit / Stroke and fill.
