Hi, Im new to forums like this so excuse me if I don't get it quite right. But I saw the voting poll and as I'm interested to learn all I can I put "all the above", but the main thing at the moment is a glow behind image sort of effect and a brilliant white type text effect. If someone could please help me with these, I'd be very grateful.

You could use the 'progressive contour' filter and check the 'outside' option - look at the text in this thread..

Bright
Sunsparkle, how are you? Welcome to the forum. I see you have PFS, so you are layer capable. One quick manner to achieve a glowy back to an object would be using the retouch tool on Gamma+ on the background behind the object. You may want to experiment with the pressure before doing your final attempt. The object must be a seperate layer. As for bright text, you could also use the same tool at the same setting to highlight white text. I have had great results in placing the text as white text, then converting the text layer to an image layer. Use the selection wand on color and select the text. Now use your progressive contour plugin under Filter < Stylize. Depending on how large the text is will determine how many pixels the progressive contour should be...choose black at first. When you have done this then use that retouch wand (tool). I hope this has been helpful. \:D/
There are also 8bf plugins for lighting effects.
