Change Palette

Is there any way to change photo palette. I would like to change all my photos to 8bit palette (256 collors). I've thought that Palette plugin will help me, but it is inactive (greyed).

Use the menu "Image / mode / Indexed color" and chose the color count

I have one more question. How I can select few areas. In other graphics app i was using the select tool with ctrl key for add selected shape (cursor changed icon to arrow with + mark)

oh well. so i have to wait for new version.
Anyway i would like to thanks for this great software. This is truly the best freeware graphics editor.
