automate Paste Assemble

I need to assemble hundreds of 256 px by 256 px images. It's a map with lots of water so many of the images are very similar to each other (all blue, for example). Is there a way to automate they way the images are assembled. The images are numbered according to the order that they need to be assembled. For example, the image names could be something like. R1C1 for row one, column one, R1C2, etc. The next set could be R2C1, R2C2, R2C3

Also, is there a size limit?
